Re: EDGA Committee Meeting Minutes, June 17, 2014
Members Present: Mark Callier (Chair), Christine Dieker (Exec Director), Nate Brown
(City of Keizer), Kyle Juran (Member), AJ Nash (Member), Jodi Berry (Member), Dan
Clem (guest).
1. Economic Development
• Economic Development Commission (EDC) Appointment.
EDGA (by consensus) approved forwarding a recommendation to the Board and
to City Council to appoint two Chamber of Commerce members AJ Nash and
Scott White to this commission, with the condition that should Scott White be
appointed directly by Keizer City Council, that Bob Zielinski and AJ Nash serve
as Chamber representatives on the EDC.
• Empty/Land Building Tours.
No action taken – awaiting formation of the EDC. This event would require
willing property owners/representatives and should be well-coordinated as a
positive communication about possibilities for new businesses in Keizer. There
is a recommendation that this event could be part of the orientation for the new
EDC members later this year.
• Community Development Director Report.
o Chemawa Rd – “cow” property re-zoning application for Multi-Familiy
public hearing held with 120 present. Discussion included unlikelihood of
commercial use there, possible amendment to design in application for re-
zoning, need for more multi-family housing in Keizer, and effect of Verda
Lane roundabout.
• Executive Director Report
o Verda Lane roundabout – City chose design option with most minimal
impact and slower speed/traffic impacts. Still working with ODOT, bids
likely out this fall.
o New Businesses -
o Issues – concerns voiced by River Road business in problems in
expanding, and concerns about how to better direct Salem Parkway traffic
(signage) onto River Road instead of into Salem.
2. Government Affairs
• Proposed Sub-Committee for Government Affairs (“GAC”)
EDGA (by consensus) approved forwarding the submitted recommendation
to the Board to form a Government Affairs Sub-Committee and to survey
Chamber members about level of desire for issues and candidates. Chair Callier
asked EDGA members to forward and desired changes on the draft survey to
Christine Dieker or Dan Clem by June 21. Extensive discussion included: recent
amendment to Chamber by-laws supporting endorsement of candidates, desire
by leadership to become more than an “event” Chamber, the Chamber getting
more involved in public policy by having the sub-committee, and the need to
avoid or not be involved in any issue/candidate which could adversely affect
businesses or the Chamber. Membership of GAC will be discussed at next
EDGA meeting.
• 2014 Election Draft Survey. (Attached)
• Candidates Forums & Questionnaires.
August: thanking educators in Keizer, distribution of questionnaires to
candidates
September and October Chamber meetings: forums for candidates.
