MLK Day of Service at Salem Keizer Education Foudation
Hundreds of volunteers will sort books, spruce up a learning garden and organize sports gear at Salem-Keizer Education Foundation in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and the national day of service Monday, Jan. 19.
Congress designated the Federal Holiday as a national day of service in 1994, calling it “a day on, not a day off.”
“We’re just ecstatic that so many groups want to put their day of service toward helping kids,” said Executive Director Krina Lee.
Kaiser Permanente, SAIF Corporation and Starbucks employees will volunteer Monday while Willamette students will serve Friday, Jan. 23 for their “Into the Streets” community service day. SKEF has plenty of room for additional volunteers to sign up and will happily take walk ins.
The volunteer hours will help the foundation get more free books into the hands of Oregon children, give more Salem-Keizer students the chance to get their hands dirty in learning gardens and make sure kids have the right equipment for afterschool sports.
Volunteers can choose from more than six activities that range from inflating soccer balls to making paper pots for learning gardens. It’s not too late to sign up. Contact Valerie Steele at (503) 364-2933 or Valerie@skeducationfoundation.
