7th Annual Walk-n-Wag
Willamette Valley Hospice will host a fundraiser for its Pet Peace of Mind program on September 14, 2019. The 7th annual Walk-n-Wag will start at 9:00 am at Minto Brown Island Park. The $10.00 registration fee helps the agency continue to fund the Pet Peace of Mind® program at Willamette Valley Hospice. Registration will be $15.00 the day of the event and kids 12 & under are free. The program, which helps provide pet care for hospice patients and their families, is a local partner of the Pet Peace of Mind Program. The event festivities will last until noon and include contests and demonstrations, a pet-centered vendor village, photo booth, and door prizes.
The program provides practical help by trained hospice volunteers for things that a pet owner may not be able to do any longer, such as walking a dog, cleaning a litter box, or taking a pet to the groomer or veterinarian. Donations also fund other needs such as pet food, cat litter, flea treatments, and basic veterinary care. Often times, these supportive services allow a hospice patient to keep their pet in their home with them throughout their illness and maintain the hospice patient’s quality of life.
“Hospice is all about comfort and quality of life. The unconditional love and acceptance between pets and their people is powerfully healing; the longer we can keep them together, the better,” says Shelley Wagener, volunteer coordinator at Willamette Valley Hospice, who oversees the Pet Peace of Mind® program.
For those hospice patients who are unable to keep their pets at home with them, Shelley works with local rescues and foster families to find permanent homes for the animals.
