Salem City Club Presents Willamette Riverkeepers
On Friday, April 16 at noon on Zoom, Salem City Club hosts Travis Williams, executive director of Willamette Riverkeepers, for the program “Our Willamette River Demands Our Attention.” The Willamette River defines the place Salem calls home. It carves our valley, nourishes all forms of life, supports industry, provides for recreation, and inspires us. It’s easy to enjoy its benefits without appreciating how our actions impact the river, below its surface, on its surface, and around its edges. Williams will speak about the Willamette River system’s current state and the work being done to protect it for generations to come. To register for the webinar, go to https://salemcityclub.com/, click the tab that says “Events,” click “Register,” and once registered, a spot will be reserved for the event. Registrants will be sent a link for the Zoom Webinar. Meetings are free for members and $5 for nonmembers. Upcoming Programs: • April 30 - Oregon Secretary of State, Shemia Fagan • May 14 - Legislative Wrap-Up. ### About Willamette Riverkeepers: The organization was founded in 1996, with offices now in Portland and Eugene. Travis Williams has been at the helm since 2000. Willamette Riverkeepers' sole mission is to protect and restore the Willamette River through various programs such as land acquisitions, volunteer cleanups, Clean Water Act compliance, Superfund projects, river education, habitat restoration, and river recreation. About Travis Williams: Travis has led Willamette Riverkeeper since June of 2000 and loves working to protect and restore the river he has swum and paddled on since he was a kid. He has worked on a wide range of river issues, from enforcing the Clean Water Act and leading efforts to clean up the Portland Harbor Superfund site to decreasing the impact of the US Army Corps Dams along the Willamette's tributaries and reducing toxins. He was given the Columbia River Hero Award in 2009 for his work to curb toxic pollution and was honored with the Helping Hands Award from the Spirit Mountain Community Fund in 2019. Williams is the author of the Willamette River Field Guide (Timber Press, 2009) and the two Water Trail Guides for the Willamette. He holds a BA from Portland State University in International Studies and an M.S. in Environmental Science from Johns Hopkins University.
